S-Stella(me) L-Lily(my grandma)
S:Hi grandma. Long time no see. How are you recently?
L:I’m fine, thanks.
S:I want to ask you some questions, so I can write a story about you. So, can we start?
L:Sure! You have to write it very impressively.
S:Ha ha. I’ll try to do my best.
S:Ok, here’s my first question, where were you born. Is that a beautiful place?
L:I was born in Ching Daw(青島). It is in China. It is a very beautiful place with a lot of mountains and it is next to the sea. Oh, because there was dominate by Germany , living there was like living in foreign country.
S:That’s so special, and how was your childhood?
L:It was an easy life. When the weather was cold, my sisters, brothers and I played the snowball, when it was hot, we rode the burro(驢子) to go swimming. Oh, I have four older brothers and three younger brothers.
S:Wow, sounds like you wew in a very big family. When did you come to Taiwan? Did you go to Taiwan by yourself?
L:No. I went to Taiwan with my parents and little brothers when I was graduated form high school. My older brothers worked in China , Hong Kong, and Japan .
S:Did you go to the university in Taiwan ?
L:Yes, I went to 東吳大學英文系. My English is very good when I was in Ching Daw.
S:Wow, you are very smart. Did you graduate from that school?
L:No, when I was in the second grade, I got a job at 美軍顧問團, so I left the campus.
S:How did you know grandpa?
L:He is my coworker’s friend.
S:Did you marry soon?
L:No, because your grandpa was transferred to another post, he had to move to Shin Ing(新營), so I followed him there, and I quitted my job.
S:What a brave decision.
L:Thanks.
S:So why did you move to America now?
L:Because my son studied there and he wanted me to move there living with him.
S:That’s a good decision. America is a good place for living.
L:That’s right. I feel comfortable there.
S:It’s good. Thanks for your help.
L:You are welcome. I wish you can write a good story.
S:Thanks.

Stella,
I like the title of your story: China-Taiwan-America. The story about your grandma reminds me of a novel, “The Joy Luck Club,” written by Amy Tan. We see the hidden strength in women through your grandmother and the characters in the novel. They have a lot in common. I think you would like to read it some day.
